TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

 

THEATRE OVERVIEW

The Rochester Theatre Company is a non-profit organization that educates and enriches the adults and young people of Rochester and southeastern Minnesota through the production and presentation of live theater, music and dance. Established in 1952, The Civic Established in 1951, the Civic has matured into an award-winning, multidisciplinary theater and performing arts resource for the City of Rochester, MN and the entire Southeast Minnesota tri-state area. JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Director is responsible for the supervision, implementation, and maintenance of all technical elements for The Civic productions, special engagements and events, including management of production staff, long-range planning, mission achievement, seasonal programming direction, and the securing of production artistic personnel.  This position reports to the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of seven years experience as Technical Director required.
  • BA degree in non-profit or Business management or related administration required. BFA preferred.
  • Demonstrate leadership skills to articulate and promote vision; inspire, lead, evaluate and motivate staff in addition to connection and involvement of community volunteers required.
  • Demonstrated skills in collaboration with artists, designers, and skilled labor.

 

SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Technical Director determines the technical requirements from designs, estimates material and production costs and communicates needs with staff, crews and contractors. Technical Director works closely with scenic designers to insure a smooth transition from concept to reality, ushering completed drawings through the build process to the safely installed final product. This includes any necessary integration with scenic construction done in house and coordination with lighting and sound crews to best utilize stage time and tools. Duties also include any needed maintenance and repair during the run and the safe strike and removal of scenery once a production closes.

Key to the role is communication with production teams and staff, keeping all informed of progress and changes on projects in a timely manner. IT proficiency and the ability to quickly extrapolate data from construction drawings are vital as the Technical Director is frequently in communication with off-site designers and contractors and needs to share clear and accurate information. Responsibilities will include dissemination of materials, both electronic and printed to Designers, Directors, Contractors and Stage Management as requested.

Candidates should have a solid technical theatre background in scenic and property construction, rigging and scenic painting. This position is hands on and will require a range of theatre experience to accommodate diverse programming requirements and meet scheduled deadlines. Technical Director identifies, hires, schedules, and supervises over-hire labor crews. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to maintain a safe and supportive work environment.

This is a full time exempt position.  Benefit package is available.
